Ahhh, college football season...how I've missed you!

Oh-my-O!
Once again, it's time for college football and the last season of the BCS.  Those of us who aren't college presidents are thrilled that this has finally happened and we just have one more season of this disaster.  So here's hoping Boise State, TCU, Ohio, Northern Illinois or some team from that mid-major American Athletic Conference (Big East?) is able to throw one last wrench into the system.

And as I do every year, I pick all of the UCLA games for the upcoming season in tribute to my long-time friend and long-time Bruin fan who longs for a football national title in his lifetime (or at least a return to the Rose Bowl).  Last year I greatly underestimated the gutty Bruins, and only went 7-5 picking their games in the regular season (9-5 overall with their conference championship and bowl games).  So here we go again and we'll try to get double-digits again on them after a lackluster 2012.

As always, this is dependent on the quarterback for the Bruins staying healthy.  Brett Hundley is an exciting player, but he plays QB at UCLA and that tends to set you up for some kind of knee injury every year for some reason.  Losing tight end Joseph Fauria is going to hurt UCLA this year (though they never seemed to completely utilize his talents while he was there).  The defense looks decent and it needs to be in the offensive-minded Pac 12.  It also needs to step up after the way they closed the season with three straight losses, two in blowout fashion.  So here we go...

Nevada - The Wolfpack are dangerous and have an electric QB of their own in Cody Fajardo.  They also have a new head coach, Brian Polian, replacing the Hall of Famer Chris Ault (father of the Pistol offense).  Fajardo will show flashes of Colin Kaepernick, but it won't be enough and the Bruins get their first win.

at Nebraska - UCLA stunned the Cornhuskers last year, 36-30, and sort of set the tone for their improved confidence last year.  This year they travel to Lincoln and it will be Hundley's first start at a truly loud and hostile crowd...well, as hostile as those nice folks from Nebraska can get to an opposing team.  Nebraska wins and the Bruins drop to 1-1.

New Mexico State - This is a terrible football team.  They went 1-11 last year, the lone win coming in the opener against Sacramento State.  After that, they lost 11 straight, only coming within 10 points once, in a 26-18 loss to Idaho (who also wound up 1-11).  Bruins win by three touchdowns and go to 2-1.

at Utah - Pac 12 play starts with the Utes.  I had high hopes for Utah when they joined the Pac 12 as they had played Pac 12 teams tough in recent years.  That's not been the case the first two years in the conference for them.  I don't think this is their year either and the Bruins take them out to move to 3-1 (2014 might be a different story).

California - Every year this game makes no sense and it didn't last year as the Bears crushed the Bruins 43-17 in an otherwise lost season that saw them fire their long-time coach Jeff Tedford.  So it all sets up for a payback game and the Bruins destroying Cal at the Rose Bowl.  I'll take the Bruins, but it will be close and won't be surprised if the Bears pull off some wacky upset.  4-1 and things are looking good, except...

at Stanford - Part I of a potential two-part season killer.  UCLA hasn't played Stanford well at all the last few years.  They were only a missed field goal away from sending last year's Pac 12 Championship game to overtime, but that was an anomaly.  Most of the recent games haven't been close and Stanford's front seven live in the opponent's backfield.  Stanford has a chance to play for a national title and the Bruins aren't going to be the team to stop them.  4-2 and get to follow up a hard hitting game with the Cardinal by traveling to...

at Oregon - Autzen Stadium and the quicker than lightning Ducks.  This might be as bad a set of back-to-back games in the nation.  After playing a physical game with Stanford that's going to leave them bruised and tired, they then have to keep up with the "Go-go-go-go" offense of Oregon.  Look for the Ducks to pull away in the second half over the tuckered out Bruins and win easily.  4-3.

Colorado - Well, after those two games, it will be nice to be back home with a scrimmage against the Buffaloes.  They have been every bit of terrible that they've seemed since coming to the Pac 12.  UCLA mauls them again to move to 5-3.

at Arizona - This game looks like a land mine.  UCLA beat the Wildcats 66-10 last year.  Arizona now has a year under Rich Rodriguez' system and the game is in Tuscon.  Arizona scored 48 or more points six times last year.  They may not get to that number against the Bruins, but I think they'll get into the upper 30's and win.  5-4.

Washington - The Huskies don't seem to be anything more than a 7-6 team each year and it probably doesn't change this year.  UCLA wins to move to 6-4.

Arizona State - If this was in Tempe, I'd take the Sun Devils.  But it's at the Rose Bowl and think the Bruins get the  win to move to 7-4.

at USC - Two years ago, I predicted before the season started that if UCLA lost to USC, Coach Rick Neuheisel would be fired.  Sure enough, the Trojans beat them 50-0 and Slick Rick was done.  This year, it's reversed.   If the Bruins can beat USC for the second straight season, USC Coach Lane Kiffin will be fired.  The Trojans have to be better than last year and if they're healthy coming into this game, they'll win.  Thinking last year was a fluke, in spite of Kiffin, and USC claims the Victory Bell while the Bruins drop to 7-5.

Here's to the start of another great season of great plays, shocking upsets, overtime thrillers and a battle to the last weekend of the season for each of the conferences and the BCS title game.  Enjoy the season.

What a way to start the season...North Carolina vs South Carolina.

Mmmmm....College Football Season Is Here!

Well, it took it long enough to get here, but a new College Football season is upon us.  After an ugly off-season (the Penn State fiasco, Bobby Petrino and his "Assistant", the conference realignments, the horrible performance by LSU in the National Championship game, etc.), it's good to finally be back to watching the product on the field and not in the tabloid headlines or court releases.

"You forgot how crazy I am!"
This time of year is always a time of excitement for all teams and their fans: the National Title aspirations of the USC Trojans coming off their sanctions and possible Heisman Trophy for Matt Barkley; the chance of a repeat for Alabama; Texas and Florida trying to bounce back from off-years; the return of everyone's favorite bug-eyed-hopped-up-on-goofballs Terry Bowden back to at Akron...hope springs eternal for everyone, and everyone's post-season chances look bright, even if they don't have a realistic shot at the crystal ball.

As I do every year before the season starts, I make my picks on all of UCLA's games.  This blog started because a friend who is a big UCLA fan suggested I start it and I've always let him know how I think his Bruins will fare.  The glory days of Bob Toledo, Cade McNown and that debacle in Miami seems so long ago...

But it's a new year, with a new coach and a new quarterback, so here we go, after going 9-4 on the Bruins last year.

at Rice - First off, what the hell, Dan Guerrero?  You open the season on the road, on a Thursday night, against a Rice team who has had back-to-back 4-8 seasons, proceeded by a 2-10 season.  How does that happen?  Why don't you have them coming to the Rose Bowl?  Have the Bruins sunk so low that they'll take a bottom-dweller of Conference USA's invitation to come play in the heat of Texas over forcing them to come to Pasadena?  It hurts the head thinking about it.  The Bruins win this one, though it might take a little while to separate themselves from the Owls, as their players wonder, "Why are we here again?"

Nebraska - The Bruins get a week off before the Cornhuskers roll into town and the UCLA fans sell off their tickets, making the Rose Bowl a sea of red.  Nebraska makes the most of the "home field advantage" and beats the "visitors".

Houston - These have been fairly entertaining games the last few years, but with no Case Keenum, the Cougars won't be able to pull it off.  Bruins improve to 2-1.

Oregon State - This is a tough call.  The Beavers struggled mightily last year and even when they're good, they have problems in the early part of the season.  Give a slight edge to UCLA as they move to 3-1.

at Colorado - Not sure the Buffaloes have gotten any better over the past year, but this sets up for UCLA to start giving their fans the false hope that they could make it to the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day.  Bruins move to 4-1 and start crawling up the rankings.

at Cal - This game never makes any sense.  When it looks like Cal should pummel the Bruins, they lose.  When it looks like UCLA should own the Bears, Cal rises up and wins.  A coin-toss again this year, but I'll take Cal at home and UCLA reading too many of their own press clippings and being over-confident, falling to 4-2.

Utah - I thought the Utes would challenge in the South division of the Pac-12 last year.  They let me down.  This year, I think they'll live up to expectations and put a hurting on the Bruins.  UCLA drops to 4-3.

at Arizona State - They played a tight one last year at the Rose Bowl, with the Sun Devils missing a last second field goal giving the Bruins the win.  This year, they take care of business at home and send UCLA to 4-4.

Arizona - The Wildcats absolutely emarassed the Bruins last year in what ended up being a disaster of a season for them.  They've lost their quarterback, but have a new head coach in Rich Rodriguez that might have the offense moving by the time they head to Pasadena.  Think it will take another year for RichRod to have the pieces in place and UCLA exacts some revenge for last year, moving to 5-4.

at Washington State - The Cougars got the coach that I had hoped UCLA would get to finally bring a quarterback to Westwood.  And while they got the coach, they still don't have the players.  Bruins roll to a 6-4 mark.

USC - Fifty to nothing.  To your rival.  An ugly way to close out the regular season last year.  And while it may not be that bad this year, it's going to be ugly again as the Bruins fall to 6-5.

Stanford - The Cardinal aren't going to be the machine they've been the last few years with Andrew Luck at the controls.  They'll still be solid and that's generally enough to beat the Bruins the last few years as they can't get out of their own way.  Look for it to continue as UCLA loses the last two at home to finish 6-6.

A few early picks for Week 1:

South Carolina -6 at Vanderbilt - The Gamecocks were a complete disaster against Auburn last year from playing LSU in the SEC Championship for a trip to the National Title Game.  If Marcus Lattimore is completely healthy and Connor Shaw has progressed under The Head Ball Coach, South Carolina will be tough again and open with an easy win against the Commodores.

At West Virginia -23.5 Marshall - This is considered a rivalry game because they're both from West Virginia, but when one team has never won a game in the series, it doesn't seem like much of a rivalry.  Marshall keeps that perfect record intact and falls again to a Mountaineer team hoping to be in the discussion for the BCS.

To all you college football fans, enjoy the start of the season this Thursday and even though I'm not a fan of the Fighting Irish, I'll be tipping back a cold one at 6am on Saturday as they kick it off against Navy in Ireland.  Welcome back, old friend; it's been a long eight months.

Bacon...Why Are We Trying To Improve Upon Perfection?

Perfection
Bacon.  The word alone sets my mouth to watering.  It engages all of your senses...the smell of it waking you up in the morning, the sound of it cooking in the pan, the sight of that pink and white piece of beautiful meat, the texture as you pick up that a-little-too-hot-but-I-don't-care piece with your fingers, the taste as it's salty flavor, crispy crunch hits your tongue.  Bacon is so good, we wrap bad tasting foods in it to make them edible (water chestnuts, chicken livers).  We wrap good tasting foods in bacon to make them divine (top sirloin, chicken breast).  But it's time to take a step back and go back to letting bacon stand on it's own.  This after my experience with the new Bacon Shake at Jack In The Box.

I can't say I had high hopes for the Bacon Shake, but it intrigued me.  A vanilla shake with a bacon syrup added to it had potential...the shake wouldn't be too sweet and the bacon flavor could blend in with the vanilla.  It could be a revelation in desserts.  So, it was off to Jack In The Box to try one.

The first warning sign should have been the fact that the restaurant had no promotional materials up for their new shake.  After being assured by the cashier that they did have it, I asked if she had tried it.  She said she hadn't and that she was afraid, that it just sounded too weird.  Well, maybe she doesn't love bacon like I do, so I ordered one even after hearing of her fear.

First off, the color seems wrong.  It should be a bacony red/pink, not white.  Secondly, it should have chopped bacon in it or on it.  I can understand that the bacon bits might interfere with drinking it through a straw, but they could have been sprinkled over the top of the whipped cream.  The appearance was not getting high marks, but perhaps the taste of bacon with ice cream would offset that.

It didn't.  As you take that first pull from the straw, as you see the shake coming closer to your lips and finally disappearing into your mouth, you are assaulted by the flavor of liquid smoke.  Your eyes wince and then as it starts to melt a little in your mouth, you detect the almost-but-not-quite bacon flavor.  My initial adjective to describe the taste was "funky".  And not in the good way, but in the way your shoes smell after taking a long hike on a hot day funky.

But maybe I had prepared myself for the worst and now that I had tried it, the next sip would be better, as I now knew what to expect.  Unfortunately, no.  The second sip was just as strange as the first, the infusion of liquid smoke hitting the taste buds first, then followed by a slightly odd bacon flavor.  It still wasn't good and I still wasn't enjoying it.  The third sip was no better and the fourth put an end to the experiment, as I felt drinking any more of this vile concoction would result in an unholy retching.

Not everything
Jack In The Box is obviously not the home of world renowned chefs plying  their trade at the highest level and I'm sure those chefs might be able to make a delicious dessert with bacon.  But bacon doesn't need to be in dessert, just like other delicious meats like baby back ribs, top sirloin or fried chicken need not be in desserts.  Let's allow bacon to stand on it's own...as an excellent companion to waffles or pancakes or eggs; as a key part of an incredible BLT; as a delicious gift wrap around a piece of steak or chicken; as a food item to be savored for it's own merits as the near perfect food that it is.

Picks for Dec. 2-3

A hiatus last week, but the 2-3 record the previous week dropped the season record to 28-26-1.  With the close of the regular season, need a big finish to make it a mediocre picking season.

at Oregon -31.5 UCLA - The Ducks throttled the Bruins in Autzen last year in a regular season game.  This year, it's back in Autzen, with the first Pac-12 Championship Game title up for grabs.  The loss to USC took some of the luster off the Ducks recent mini-dynasty of the Pac-12 and this game will give them a chance to clear everyone's thoughts of the Trojans and remind them who has won the last three.  Oregon big over the Bruins.

at Arkansas State -17.5 Troy - The Red Wolves have been a surprise this season and their only two losses are to Illinois (when they were good this year) and Virginia Tech.  They are also 9-2 against the spread.  Troy on the other hand is 3-8 against the spread.  The Trojans won't have the talent to keep up with Arkansas State and the Red Wolves will get that 10th win.

at Houston -12.5 Southern Miss - The problem for Southern Miss is that Houston is playing pretty good defense.  Couple that with the top-scoring offense in the country and Case Keenum's final game at home and you can expect the Cougars to keep the scoreboard turning.  Keenum throws for at least four touchdowns and Houston finishes the season 13-0.

LSU -12.5 Georgia - The Tigers have done it all year long and there's no reason to think they won't finish it off.  Georgia had a nice season after losing the opening two games to Boise State and South Carolina.  But they avoided LSU, Alabama and Arkansas in the regular season.  Now they play a quality opponent set on continuing their perfect season.  LSU's defense will be too much for the Bulldogs as they roll to the championship.

Wisconsin -9.5 Michigan State - The Spartans beat the Badgers earlier this year.  Michigan State needed a safety, a blocked punt returned for a touchdown, a blocked field goal and two Russell Wilson interceptions AND a tipped Hail Mary at the end of the game that required replay review to overturn the call on the field to give Sparty the win.  That isn't all going to happen again.  Badgers roll and return to Pasadena.

UCLA Should Hire Pete Carroll

With the predictable firing of UCLA head coach Rick Neuheisel today, the Bruins are once more searching for a head coach.  And it's time for them to make some waves.  Rumors of them talking to Boise State's Chris Petersen is a start, but while he's an excellent coach, he doesn't bring the buzz that the Bruins need.  Not after a decade of mediocrity to dismal play.  They need someone who can help close the gap between UCLA and USC (and that gap apparently is as big as the Grand Canyon after the 50-0 crosstown beat down).  The man to do it is the one who created that gap...Pete Carroll.

The new head coach of the Bruins?
Bruin fans, settle down.  I can already hear your cries of "That's the enemy" and "We don't want Pete the Cheat".  Be reasonable and hear me out.  The Bruins are a bad football team and worse, their fan base is becoming apathetic.  They can't get a quarterback to come play in southern California on a gorgeous campus.  They can't get a running back who can go for 1,300 yards and 18 touchdowns.  They haven't played defense in years.  Pete Carroll can get all of those things.  And...he can make the Bruins relevant.

Carroll is/was the ideal college coach.  He loved being the Big Man on Campus and had fun doing everything related to the game - interviews, talking with fans, promoting the team.  He's what UCLA needs.  Can you imagine the energy for UCLA football next year?  Dan Guerrero, think of the season ticket sales.  Sure, some fans will think you've brought the enemy in to camp, but you'll get a whole lot more who will be excited about him being there.  You're losing millions each weekend when you're not selling out the Rose Bowl.  Pete can put them in the seats.

Carroll would also bring innovation to the offense and ferocity to the defense.  Those Trojan title teams had both.  They had stars on both sides of the ball.  But what about Pete's baggage from his time at USC?  The NCAA spent five years investigating and they couldn't come up with anything to place on Carroll.  If there was something there, don't you think it would have shown up?  Wouldn't some closet Notre Dame or UCLA fan have blown the whistle on him to cause the empire to crumble?  No one did.

Finally, think of how hiring Pete Carroll would get under all of the USC fans' skin.  The coach who returned them to glory after years of futility is now patrolling the rivals sideline in powder blue and gold, returning the Bruins to glory and Rose Bowls (yes, the Bruins used to be regular participants in that game many years ago).  If you're going to pay $4 million for Chris Petersen, why not step it up a bit more and bring in Pete Carroll?  He could make national title dreams a reality.

The Regular Season Doesn't Matter

#1 Team in College Football
The people who run college football continually tell us that the reason we don't need a playoff is because every regular season game matters; every game is a playoff.  Not this year.  The BCS pundits are already saying that LSU vs Alabama for the national title is a done deal, even if LSU loses.  If every game matters, and LSU already beat Alabama in Alabama, shouldn't that have knocked the Crimson Tide out of the running, never mind the fact that 'Bama didn't even win their conference, let alone win their division.  Ahhh, but we have precedent, because if there's one thing the BCS is good at, it's stupid decisions.

In 2001, Nebraska was routed in their final regular season game by Colorado, 62-36.  Colorado won the division and won the Big-12 Championship.  But since every game matters, the embarrassed Cornhuskers were invited to play Miami for the championship, because apparently that last game didn't really matter and not winning your conference wasn't seen as being too important either.  Nebraska followed up that blowout loss to the Buffaloes with another stellar performance against the Hurricanes, falling behind 34-0 at halftime before showing a bit of a pulse and losing only 37-14.

But this year is worse.  LSU went into Alabama's home and beat them.  Granted, it was an ugly 9-6 overtime win, with four missed Crimson Tide field goals contributing to the loss.  But the Tigers won and didn't lose the rest of the year.  Game over, 'Bama.  So why should LSU play the SEC Championship game to get into the National Championship Game while Alabama sits at home, resting and nursing their injuries?  Why should LSU have to beat them again?  If Alabama wins, the season series is tied 1-1.  If LSU wins, well, they already did that.

Alabama may be the second best team in the country but they already had their chance and they failed.  You don't get a do-over.  So who should be in the title game?  Well, LSU still has to take care of Georgia in the SEC Championship.  They should beat them soundly, since LSU isn't Oklahoma in conference championships.  The Tigers are in.  Their opponent should be one of the following:

Will the voters move a Big-12 Champion
to the tile game?
Oklahoma State, if they beat Oklahoma this Saturday (not a foregone conclusion).  The Cowboys have one loss, in double-overtime on the day they found out assistant coaches for their women's basketball team had died in a plane crash.  Granted, it was to Iowa State, but it was played at Iowa State and with heavy hearts.  If they beat the Sooners, they will be the champs of the best conference in college football this year.  If they lose...

Virginia Tech, if they can avenge their loss to Clemson.  The Hokies have rolled since that loss and unfortunately for the Tigers, they have been a mess the last few weeks.  Why is it fair that Virginia Tech gets a chance to beat Clemson after getting buried by them early in the season but I'm not willing to give Alabama that same opportunity?  Well, it's the ACC Championship game and that's how the schedule worked out this year.  If Alabama was in the SEC East and lost to LSU but still won their division, I'd have no problem with the rematch...in the conference championship game.  Championship games might make your conference some money, but you potentially screw your best team.  If Clemson some how gets their act together and plays like they did the first eight weeks and not the last three and beats the Hokies again, then it's...

Stanford.  No, same argument as Alabama.  The Cardinal didn't win their division and they didn't win their conference.  They had a great season, but the Oregon game mattered and they got destroyed.

Oregon.  No, same argument as Alabama, in that they don't get a rematch.  LSU beat them in the first game of the year, but they knew that was a potential elimination game.  Credit to the Ducks for scheduling it and if they wouldn't have lost to USC two weeks ago, I'd almost say they could get in based on having the loss in that first game than winning twelve in a row and being the Pac-12 Champion.  But the Ducks have two losses and beating up on UCLA in the inaugural Pac-12 Championship isn't going to help.

Wisconsin/Michigan State winner.  No, though Wisconsin is close.  They blew out everyone they played except for the two losses.  Back-to-back heart breakers on back-to-back miracles by Michigan State and Ohio State.  If not for those few minutes, Wisconsin is in.  Michigan State got blown out by Notre Dame and Nebraska, so even with a win in the Big Ten Championship game, they can't go.

Why not us?
Houston.  If the Cougars beat Southern Mississippi in the Conference USA Championship game, they will be the only other unbeaten at 13-0.  And while they may play in a mid-major conference, they've beaten everyone they played and are crushing teams now and not just on offense behind Case Keenum.  The defense has stepped up as well and even in the fourth quarter when the backups are in, they're still shutting people down.  Why not give the non-automatic qualifier a shot this year?  Then if LSU beats them 45-7, the BCS conferences can laugh and say, "See, they're not really that good."  But if they win...well, what kind of ESPN 30 for 30 film will that be?

My prediction:  LSU handles Georgia.  Oklahoma State at home finally figures out a way to beat Oklahoma.  Virginia Tech takes care of Clemson.  Alabama sits on their couches watching all of this unfold.  And then on Sunday, LSU finds out they're playing Alabama again.  Well done, BCS.  Well done.

Picks for Nov. 19

Rolled on the MAC games but the others didn't go as well and finished up 2-3 last week to fall to 26-23-1 for the year.  This week's picks shine the light on teams who have a chance to make a statement after Oklahoma State's upset loss to Iowa State last night.

at Oregon -15 USC - Oregon has one blemish on their record, the opening game loss to LSU.  Since then, they've been rolling and with Oklahoma State's loss, they have the chance to jump up and try to set up a rematch with LSU in the Championship Game.  Autzen Stadium has been tough on the Trojans the last few years and their lack of depth will leave them gassed as the game goes on.  The Ducks will keep the pedal down and run it up on USC.

at Stanford -17.5 Cal - The Big Game.  Stanford suffered a huge blow to their national title hopes, but with Oklahoma State losing, they still have a shot if they can get some help.  And they can start off by helping themselves and throttling Cal.  Cal's wins have all come against inferior opponents and when they've played the good teams in the Pac-12, they've gotten torched.  Stanford is one of the best teams in the Pac-12, it's a rivalry game and it's at home.  The Cardinal big.

Oklahoma -16 at Baylor - Thanks to the Cowboys loss, the Sooners have a shot to play for the national title.  It would have been better for them if Oklahoma State went into Bedlam unbeaten, but now Oklahoma knows they have to roll Baylor and OSU.  Baylor can score some points, but they don't play any semblance of defense and they haven't faced a defense like the Sooners.  If Oklahoma is focused, they get up early and they pull away by the third quarter.

Kansas State +9.5 at Texas - I still don't see what people see in Texas this year.  They've been mediocre at best and against good teams, they've faded.  The Wildcats were a tad overrated when they were unbeaten, but they're still better than the Longhorns at this point.  I look for Kansas State to not only cover, but to win this game outright.

at Houston -19.5 SMU - Houston has the opportunity to bust the BCS this year and a big win over the Mustangs will help their cause.  SMU has struggled the last few weeks and Cougars' QB Case Keenum will continue to add to his NCAA records as Houston moves to 11-0.
